Ivermectin

Function and Application

Used for preventing and treating parasitic diseases such as nematodes and mites in livestock and pets.
Dogs and cats:
Preventing Heartworm: It is one of the core uses of this product and should be taken once a month.
Treatment of ectoparasites: scabies mites, ear itching mites, demodex mites, lice, etc.
Treatment of intestinal nematodes: roundworms, hookworms, etc. (but usually not preferred).
Pigs: Expel gastrointestinal nematodes (such as pig roundworms, esophageal nematodes), lung nematodes (posterior roundworms), and surface parasites (scabies mites, blood lice).
Sheep: Expel gastrointestinal nematodes, lung nematodes, and sheep nosefly maggots.
Cattle: Expel gastrointestinal nematodes, lung nematodes, cowhide maggots, striped skin maggots, etc.

Pharmacological effects

Abamectin broad-spectrum antiparasitic drugs. This product enhances the permeability of chloride ions through the postsynaptic membrane of invertebrates, thereby blocking the transmission of neural signals and causing parasite paralysis and death. It has a good killing effect on both internal and external parasites, especially nematodes and arthropods, but is ineffective against tapeworms, flukes, and protozoa.

The dosage of different animals varies greatly and must be accurately calculated! The following is a reference dosage, please refer to the actual product manual and veterinary prescription:
Dogs (used for preventing heartworms and treating mites):
Dosage: 0.05-0.1 mg of ivermectin per 1 kg body weight. When treating mite disease, higher doses (such as 0.2-0.4 mg/kg) may be required, but they must be carried out under close veterinary monitoring!
Calculation example (prevention of heartworm): A 20kg dog, calculated at 0.05mg/kg, needs to take a total of 1mg of ivermectin. To use the 5mg/tablet specification, 1/5 tablet should be taken.
[ Extremely Important ]: Varieties with MDR1 gene mutations such as Collie, Sheltie, Australian Shepherd, and Old English Shepherd are extremely sensitive to ivermectin and are prohibited or only used at very low doses (such as heartworm prophylaxis). Genetic testing or consultation with a veterinarian is required before medication.
Pig:
Dosage: 0.3 mg ivermectin per 1 kg body weight.
Calculation example: A 50kg pig needs to take a total of 15mg of ivermectin. To use the 5mg/tablet specification, 3 tablets need to be taken.
Sheep:
Dosage: 0.2 mg ivermectin per 1 kg body weight.
Calculation example: A 30kg sheep needs to take a total of 6mg of ivermectin. To use the 5mg/tablet specification, 1.2 tablets need to be taken.
Cow:
Dosage: 0.2 mg ivermectin per 1 kg body weight.
Calculation example: A 300kg cow needs to take a total of 60mg of ivermectin. To use the 5mg/tablet specification, 12 tablets need to be taken.

Adverse reactions

Neurotoxicity: The most typical adverse reaction of overuse. Symptoms include mental depression, ataxia (shaking while walking), tremors, dilated pupils, coma, and even death. Dogs with MDR1 gene defects are particularly susceptible.
Injectable forms may cause local reactions (such as pain and swelling), while oral tablets have relatively fewer adverse reactions.
When used to treat canine demodex mites, the massive death of the parasite may cause transient itching, erythema, and other reactions.

Precautions 

Animals allergic to ivermectin are prohibited.
MDR1 gene mutant dog breeds are prohibited or used with extreme caution (only within the safe dosage range).
It is strictly prohibited to use it on aquatic animals.
Safety: This product has a narrow therapeutic index and a small safety range. It is necessary to accurately measure body weight and calculate dosage, especially when used for dogs and cats.
Before starting to prevent heartworm infection: Dogs need to undergo heartworm testing and confirm negative results before starting medication. Dogs infected with adult insects may experience severe reactions when using prophylactic drugs.
Compatibility precautions: Avoid co administration with other drugs that inhibit the central nervous system.
